Will I get fatter as I get older?

With obesity levels tripling in the last 20 years and rising, what chance have you got of bucking the belly trend? Here’s what happens as you age.

Your teens

Blame your hormones
Once both sexes hit puberty, it's not just the obvious love bumps that start growing. "We lay down fat according to the hormones pumping through our bodies," explains Dr Rashmi Sharma, infertility specialist, Moolchand Women's Hospital. "Pubescent boys are packed with muscle building testosterone, while girls' rising oestrogen levels make them gain weight on the hips and the thighs to become successful child-bearers."

Your 20s

Spread out
Your six-pack is inching closer to your dad's beer-belly than you think, warns Gurgaon-based nutritionist Jyoti Arora. "With more responsibilities, you become less active and lose muscle mass." Muscle mass is up to 25 times more metabolically active than fat, so by losing just 1-1.3kg of lean tissue, you'll burn about 100 fewer calories each day. Over a year, this can make you at least 4.5kg heavier
